So you want to remove the D shapes and save the rest? Draw the D shapes and set your CAM program to mill out "inside" - ie mill out in the D shape waste part. You'll get the plate with the shapes as hole/holes and some smaller D shapes left over from the inside. The only chips you'll get are those from the kerf of the milling cutter. You don't want pocketing as this will mill everything out.

If you wanted to save the D parts, mill "outside."

i have a part that is flat - say 0.25" thick and I want to cut a 1.75" x 1.5" double "D" shape out of the center of it. I can "pocket" it but that creates a whole bunch of chips that I don't really want or need to create. What do I call this cut out area instead of "pocket". The goal is to make a couple trips around the perimeter of the cut out area. THANKS!
