I've thought about it, never bothered getting organised though.

There is/was a Yahoo group for exactly that, unfortunately I can't remember
the name. SeeMeCNC is one but the group I'm thinking of was around earlier
than that.

This might interest you: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5233, goes through
the software which was the hardest bit. It's not a complete solution as it
requires some manual code clean-up. Note their speed, 173mm which is about
7 IPM. That's pretty slow for a router, the only thing slowing you down is
the speed of the print head.

Slic3r does Mach3 these days, so have a look at that. You still need an
additional controller board to handle head temperatures and all that. The
heads themselves seem to be pretty much sorted these days.
