I've done fluid dispensers that retract for the same reason, makes sense the
plastic extruder would as well. Still, as you say it's just another line of
g-code.

Some routers are pretty quick, especially the belt drive ones for wood.
Milling machines (for steel etc) tend to be on the slow side. The project I
mentioned was only doing 7 IPM, even my mill is faster than that. Slow
speed would be ok for a bit of a play, or if you're really patient. I
wonder where their bottleneck was.
