I have used resin 3D printing service quite a bit and feel that my $ is better spent having a service provider do the printing.    If you are looking for a quality end product rather than the "experience"  go for a service provider.   If you want to play with 3D printing then a plastic squirter is probably the best bet and a specific machine is probably more suitable than attempting to retrofit a cnc router.   Make magazine has a 3D printing special publication on news stands which I found interesting.

There are two things that prevented me from putting an extruder on my CNC
machine - my CNC just isn't fast enough - and while you *could* print
slowly I did not want to wait days for something to print :) and also the
*need* for a heated bed - the best prints are on a heated platform and I
did not want to make one for the size of my CNC machine (36"X47") plus I
have problem with lifting on my small bed as it is - I can only imagine how
bad it would be with something bigger!

I was in that 3d printing and fabrication group on Yahoo but it was mostly
about the resin stuff that I was not interested in so I unjoined... the
reprap forums are probably the best place to go http://forums.reprap.org/
