I agree about the pid controller. But the statement about the extruder
only running one direction is erroneous.
The extruder does back up from time to time to prevent drool when not
extruding. Still just G-code, though.

Most printers are way faster than most routers. If your router uses
single start lead screws, it is likely too slow.
