Hi. I'm guessing here you are refering to a size 42 step motor. It's
inductance will be several millihenries.
An example of a low inductance motor might be a single stack 23 rated
at 3.8A, 1.25V. That motor has a rated inductance of 600uH. If you
were to run it at 80VDC, (not recommended for the motor's sake), the
peak current would be 80V/600uH times 25uS or 3.33A of inductive
current.
An example of a shorted-turn motor would be 10uH of inductance. Under
the same conditions 80V/10uH times 25uS equals 200A of current.
Obviously the current would never get that high because either the
power supply or the winding resistance would limit the current to a
lesser value. However it would be safe to assume it still would be
high enough to comfortably destroy the drive in short order.
