I can't let this go on any further without putting my 2 cents in. I don't
normally reply to off topic posts but...

I have two teenage daughters that I do my very best to teach right from
wrong and try to
watch over them to ensure they always do right. Usually they do, but
sometimes they don't.
I am thankful I have two kids that are as good as they are. But others
aren't that lucky.
However I know someone that had a son that just wouldn't do right in his
teens. They tried and tried to
make him fly in formation. But he just wouldn't. So he got into trouble. His
4 brothers and sisters didn't.
It was HIS responsibility for HIS actions. Not his parents. If the parents
didn't commit the crime,
why should they pay for it? You can only control a teenager so far.
Sometimes you give your kids
a little freedom and they violate your trust. Then you reel them in. But a
parent can only do so much.
If the parents had a history of not trying to control their kids, then I say
let them have it! Bury them in
legal problems. However, if they are good parents who just have a rebel
child and can't control him,
punish the child and not the parents. You can usually tell quickly which
type of parents they are. 12 year olds roaming the streets late at night are
usually a good sign of bad parenting.
I think the biggest problem we have in the USA right now is people trying to
find someone else to blame
for all of their problems. I make several mistakes daily. But I don't try to
find someone else to blame. I
learn from my mistakes and try not to make the same one twice. If people
would start taking responsibility
for their own actions, we would all live in a better place.
If a child commits an "adult crime" then that child should be punished as an
adult. Not the parents! Society has made it dangerous to punish a child. It
is so easy for a child to call children's services and report false abuse
and then the government will get involved. We've seen that sort of thing in
the news recently. There are cases where they should. But there are a lot of
others where the government oversteps it's bounds and destroys families.
It is also the 'go for the money' attitude that has caused rampant lawsuits
and increasing costs for every product you buy. Today, you must protect your
assets from lawsuits from money grabbing lawyers. It is not that hard to do
and I would imagine most parents that are afluent enough to have enough
assets to go after would know this and have lawyers that put measures in
place to protect their assets. A judgement is worthless if there are no
assets you can collect. It just increases your loss in legal fees.
