Iain that is some really bad news! I'd be angry at the kids but they are kids if they're 12. When they set fire to your house I'm pretty sure they had no idea what could have happened. To have the nerves though to brake into someone's house and do it is what deserves punishment. I don't think you are going to get anywhere with the law. So long as your going to get your stuff back on the insurance I'd go for option number two. Find out where these kids live, then get your family in the car and drive round to have a talk with them. Ask them why they did it and if they knew there were two other kids in the house alone. That ought to be enough to put the fear of God into them for a while, it'll probably be a lot more affective than a few days on house arrest and councelling or whatever they might get. I wouldn't be too offensive about it just say it like you actually expect and answer. You'll have to get the parents to let you speak to the kids if they answer the door so say you'd like to speak to him or you'll take them to court. You can guess what kind of parents you'll find in the house and they probably wouldn't be bothered if you hit them (Not that you should) so long as they didn't have to move away from infront of the TV. I'm really sorry to hear that happened though and I hope your family get over it quickly. You know what you have to do now though... add that 30kV capacitor bank to your shop's door!
