First, you need to know that the encoder will set the resolution of
the system then, instead of the stepper. If the encoder resolution
is much higher than the stepper, however, there will be many positions
that can't be reached (unless you have microstepping drivers) and
it will cause the CNC to wildly hunt for places it can't get to. You
will then have to put in a deadband to stop the hunting.

You will need an encoder counter. The cheapest is the Dan Mauch
DRO, which I believe requires an ISA slot in the computer.
