screwed up if you had to get the real time patch to apply and compile a new
kernel.

the parameters tuned right. If you are running a microstep drive and a high
reduction this may not be fast enough, but is likely fine for most setups.
Not only is EMC generating the step and direction pulse, but it is running a
programmed pulse task in freqmod.o that sets the base timing all the steps
are generated from. That is where the heavy overhead comes from.
Jon Elson has designed an external pulse generator and is working with some
others to create a motion module that will drive it.
