I think Art's point is that the fastest way to learn this complex hobby is
to jump in, spend a little coin on some parts and start figuring it out.
Trying to sit out on the sidelines and design the ultimate system is and
think that you are getting a grasp on the hobby is a sure path to self
delusion. Nothing like a few real world problems to get you going down the
right path.

Warning. It is much cheaper to sit on the side and talk and listen to all
the fun we are having with real chips being slung about.
