The origional poster did not mention his maximum voltage. If he is
using the Xylotex boards, his ceiling is 35 volts and his choice is
very good. He did mention a PacSci 5210 driver which has a limit of
40 volts. so a high voltage supply will not work for him.

That said, we did not mention that the higher the voltage, the better
the performance. His unit should run on the 24v, if his steppers are
rated for less than about 5volts.


I stand corrected that transformers can be much more costly than a
complete power supply.

I have been fortunate to get a bunch of transformers for almost no
money. either from the junk yard or connections with friends. That
said, I've not spent $30.00 for the dozen transformers I have and
most are WAY WAY oversize for small projects.

I too see the simplicity of surplus power supplies. I needed
something less than 35V to run a Xylotex and it was either spend
$5.00 for a cap or $5.00 for a 24V 5A switcher.

Seems we need to start asking what drivers the guy is using when they
ask about power supplies.
