The term "earth" is used in the same sense as "ground". It usually refers
to that ZeroVoltage plane that can absorb either an excess of electrons, or
give then up, if necessary. In your specific instance, I assume it refers
to the "return-path" of the current. Most electronic applications use a
"ground-plane", which is a conductive strip interconnecting all
(supposedly) 0-volt potentials. The ground plane is often also a machine
ground. Some safety requirements specify that a device be grounded to
earth, meaning that the apparatus' ground plane be connected to a
"ground-rod" (usually 5/8" to 1" copper coated steel), which is to be
driven into the earth from 6 to 20 feet deep, depending on the conductivity
of the earth. I'm aware of a Plasma-Cutting machine that required 4
separate 20 ft ground rods, before the leakage voltage requirements (of the
manufacturer) were satisfied.
