Chris: I have done this. I also made a critical mistake. I used a mold
release spray that I already had on hand. The problem was not in
releasing but that the clearance was too tight after it released. I
spent days trying to break in the moglice nut. The problem got worse
when I oiled it. The oil took up what clearance was there and made it
even tighter. I even tried breaking in the nut with a motor. Back and
forth, all that happened was lots of squeeling and lots of heat. I
eventually made a scraper that I could remove some of the moglice from
the internal thread to loosen things to the point of making it usable.
The nut was for the crossfeed on a South Bend Model A lathe. I only used
the machine for a brief time because I got a Hardinge HLV-H and adapted
the ballscrew setup for that machine and the SB has not been used since.
The point being, I probably should have used the release agent that is
recommended for use with Moglice. At least I wound up with zero
backlash. Of course hindsight tells me that I would have been better off
making another nut rather than trying to free up the tight one.
Well, that is my story. I hope that it helps. Carey
