  Could you put a high value resistance directly connected, and in parallel to
that put the rotary switch with the additional (compensated) resistance
values for the other settings??? this way there is always at least some
resistance present...
Alternatively, use a "make before break" switch... then as you make the
change, you briefly get a high value, but never a low (or no) value...

You would still have to be careful with a switch because
it will open up in between your resistor positions and go
straight to 7amp output. That is a break before make switch
their maybe a way around this or use Mariss's idea since he
did design the Gecko drives.
