Although the Maximum Power of the Gecko is 7Amp's, the motor was not. In
seconds, the motor shorted and even a Gecko, which is superbly built, cannot
support a shorted winding in a stepper. The controllers smoked in seconds.
Thats why I say you should always have a resistor right on the controller
current control. That way , if the wiring harness should break a wire, or a
pot go bad, the drive would simply go to some max value that the motor could
handle without shorting. For example, if a motor can handle 4 amps and you
wish to vary it from 1-4, put a resistor for 4 amps on the controller and
control the current with a paralleled pot which could lower the resitance
from there. Just seems much safer to me.
