I think you mean a "shorted" condition not an "open" one. 7 amps on the
gecko is "open" or no resistor or infinite. You would have to ask Mariss
what would happen if you had a "shorted" condition or 0 ohms resistance.

Hi Ron:
A Pot will work , but be warned, pots have a way of going bad and if it
goes open in this application, the controller will let out its magic smoke.
I would advise putting whatever resitance is used for 7 amps in parallel
with the pot so you never get an "open" condition. You just have to use a
large enough resitance in the pot so the combined resistance varies from 0
ohms (low current) to a max of the 7 amp resistance.
