What happened, why did it smoke? Was the output to the motors shorted or
too low resistance?

Hi Derek:
No, I had it right, if you don't hook a resistor ( or a pot goes open),
you get 7 amps' (or more ), One of my customers ran his with no resistors.
All three smoked instantly. A Short would just give you no current, and that
won't hurt.
