Lots of good advise about resources and things worth reading. One thing I
would highly recommend is getting started. Seems lots of people sit on the
sidelines until they understand the perfect setup. Unfortunately they have
not gotten any experience and are unable to make that perfect setup. It is
well worth spending a little money and start learning. Start with little
steppers out of a printer or copier and drive them with a L293D. It is low
tech and will not do any machining but it will let you start getting your
hands dirty and learning the ins and outs of the electronics you are going
to need to know. For about $25 you can get a stepper motor running on your
workbench. Another thing you can do is buy a single drive, a small motor to
connect to it and hook it up to a piece of threaded rod. Then connect the
drive to a computer and start playing with the software packages. I amused
myself with 2 tongue depressors rubber banded onto a pair of nuts on some
1/4-20 rod that was attached to the motor by some zip ties and filament
tape. Must have kept me occupied for a week just watching the indicator
(tongue depressors) move back and forth with a ruler next to them to see if
it moved the proper distance.
Don't be put off and get into analysis paralysis. Drop some coin and start
experimenting.
