  Brian,
I feel the very best way for you to get a feeling for this whole concept is
to purchase an inexpensive "kit" with everything you need to "drive" a couple
of stepper motors.
I can't think of a better way to learn than learning the first part of this
hobby: Spend - Spend - Spend !
Go to: http://www.stepperworld.com/ and purchase his little 3 axis kit for
$150. I do not think anything will be as cheap unless you really want to
learn from the very ground up.
You can make a little machine of sorts with it, apply a "cnc" software to it
and learn alot !
Obviously, it won't power that big Bridgeport your dreaming of, but you will
learn the basics !
Go ahead, Get out your wallet, operators are standing by !
