In my case, TurboCNC and Vedit, a text editor that I've been using for
years, are the only applications running on this computer. Both run quite
well without the EMM386.EXE memory manager, with TurboCNC being able to
generate pulses well beyond 4000 steps per second (my motors stall out at
between 4000-4500 SPS, so I haven't really taken it any further). Given
exactly the same setup, but with EMM386.EXE installed, I could not reliably
pulse the motors beyond 600-900 SPS.

When I used an oscilloscope to look at the step pulses emanating from the
printer port under each of these running environments, I found that the
pulse train exhibited some pulses which were significantly delayed from the
previous pulse to cause problems for the motor. When I did the same
experiment without invoking EMM386.EXE, the pulse train was quite stable and
exhibited no "delaying".

Note that I am running Novell DOS-7 without any of the multitasking features
loaded and am using Novell's EMM386.EXE manager. I can't really infer that
the same problem exists running MS-DOS 6.22 with MicroSoft's EMM386.EXE
memory manager, but wouldn't be surprised.

Actually, I've implemented a "menu" in my CONFIG.SYS file to allow me to
boot either with or without the EMM386.EXE manager, so I can run either with
or without the EMM386 manager.

Since my computer is at the "low end" in terms of speed and memory usage, I
initially thought that lack of power caused the problem. Only after one
gentlemen on the Yeager Automation list indicated that he was using the same
computer as I (Zenith Z-Star EX 486DX2-50 with 8 Mbytes of memory) with
success did I start looking into what drivers my machine was running and
what those drivers were doing to me. Of course, everyone elses mileage may
vary from mine.

|EMM386.EXE is used by MSDOS as an Extended Memory Manager and is
|required by quite a few DOS applications which use memory outside
|the standard DOS segment.

|Adding the word 'REM ' at the start of the line will convert the
|line from being a Code line to being a Comment line. EMM386.EXE
|will not be configured and any reliant DOS application will cease
|to operate.

|Neither, I just commented the line that invokes it in CONFIG.SYS. Don't
|delete it, as you might want it for other applications of the computer.
|Simply open CONFIG.SYS in your editor and add the word "rem " at the start
|of the line that calls EMM386.EXE.
