I have resolution of .00005" (That's 50 uInch) on the X and Y, and
.000025" (25 uInch) on the Z. I have high-precision ballscrews
from a circuit board drilling machine that are accurate to .0001"
over the entire length. I have made some parts with .020" end mills,
and usually things mike out to +/- .003" overall, most of which is
tool deflection, especially with small end mills. I think I need to
work on the condition of the ways before I will do better.

As for slow steppers, the driver is usually the key. Some drivers
just do not perform well at high speeds. If you have a R/L
driver, that will perform very badly. A chopping-type, bipolar
driver is usually the best. Also, low inductance motors generally
perform much better.
