That is pretty much it.

Not following why I would need 7 feet of travel? Assuming a 10" blade I
figure it would take about 4 feet of travel. That is the 37" lenght of stock
plus 2 times the dimension across the blade (aprox 5") a the depth required
to cut 3" deep.

Correct. The first cut is scrap to trim the block.
