Define "higher grade balsa"
Sig has been supplying some of th highest grade balsa ever since they
started that operation.
We still stock their product in our hobby shop.
Back in the middle 50's Glenn and Hazel Sigafoose were the people that got /
kept me in model aviation. I am an ex Iowa farm boy and they lived about an
hour and a half from our farm. Claude McCulla and Maxie Hester lived even
closer.
I don't know what you would do to improve on their method of production. I
know that it was not just the bandsaw that made the difference as it was
more so the sanders that Glenn designed and built. Glenn knew more about how
things should work and how to take an idea and make a machine that would do
it right than most machinests. We lost a good one there.
Additional Information: At one time we rented space for a guy (FLAKE) that
produced model airplane kits including the Peppermint Patty pattern plane.
He bought the company from the orig. designer and got with it a power
sanding machine simular to what Sig used so I think the sander is probably
indgeinous to producing good balsa sheeting.
Dust is a problem and balsa dust is highly flammable / explosive. You have
to control it even from bandsaws.
