I do quite a lot of engraving at work, mainly on thin materials - 1.5mm
acrylic and ABS, 3mm acrylic, 1.5mm Formica and 1.5mm FR4 (PCB). I use
double sided tape to hold virtually all the jobs I do. The only time I have
any problems is when routing small items. For very small items I help the
tape by pushing down on the part with the aid of a small steel rod.
I use a sacrificial table top made out of lacquered MDF. This provides good
adhesion but the tape still peels off afterwards.
Ordinary carpet tape can be difficult to remove as it tears, rather than
peeling off. What you need is a plastic film type tape, with the film as
thick as possible for strength.
