Terry,
The correct metric to imperial conversion is 1 inch is EXACTLY
25.4000000000000 mm. This is not a rounded off number and has a
theoretically infinite number of significant digits. The 1.609 km per mile
has only 4 sig-fig and is an approximation which is why it changes depending
on the precision to which the source reports this value. Use 25.4 mm per
inch as the exact value and you cannot go wrong.
