I always thought the base units should have been the same
like 1 gram = 1 liter of water = 1 meter^3 and so on
and with the newer better measuring techniques today the old water standard
went out the window ,now its wavelengths of light etc.
so these days the metric system is just as arbitrary as any of the old ones
it just uses base 10 so you will be sure to missplace a decimal somewhere
when figuring weights to volumes and such :-)
I was on a factory tour in high school and someone asked the engineer/guide
if they were switching to metric
his reply was "nope ,we can ship US standard replacement parts anywhere on
the planet within 24 hours so we don't need to change anything"
