Hi,
Didn't you know it is the US that is out of step with the rest of the world
not the other way around. :-)))))
As for the politics, it was the government of this country that decided we
were in the S.I. system just about the time I was leaving school to go on to
land surveying and architectural design drawing. I only mentioned the
English mile because your US one is shorter along with your gallon. Strange,
every Texan I ever met told me everything was bigger and better in the
States. We operate neither a metric nor an imperial system here. We still
have miles and the shops has only just been banned from selling in pounds
and ounces. All material is bought in metres but most metal is still
available in imperial sizes. We drink pints but buy petrol (gas) in litres.
The weather report temperatures are given in centigrade until summer, when
the forecaster always tells us in Fahrenheit as well as it comes somewhere
near 78 degrees.
Cars had Whitworth bolts, which became BSF and BSC along with UNF and UNC
only to change again to Metric Course and Fine. Then to add to it a Metric
Medium came in as well. I had more spanners than you could shake a stick at.
I started my schooling in feet and inches, pounds, shillings and pence. Only
to finish in metres and millimetres, pound and new pence. There was 2.4 old
pennies to the new pence. New pence are never referred to as pennies, and
they now want to move us over to Euros, wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for
the name.
Is it any wonder I have a little confusion, but still got it right with
25.4mm to the inch.
Regards,
Terry

| Surely the politics in this Century have not precluded England from
accepting
| the S.I. definition of the inch as EXACTLY ("by definition") 25.40000000
| mm!!!!
|
| What has the English mile got to do with kilometers? Or, is the
Kilometre
| different there?????
