A good majority of the current production motors are given unipolar and
bipolar ratings. There in no real difference in the motor between one for
unipolar and bipolar, only in what coil wires are brought out. With an 8
wire unit you have every possible wire combination available for all
unipolar and bipolar schemes and will have absolutely no benefit compared to
a motor where the manufacturer wired them for a particular scheme internally
(6, 5, or 4 wire).
It is true that the newer production motors are higher performance (greater
torque for the size and better microstep performance) than some of the older
motors, but it is only wiring that make a motor a specific bipolar motor.
