You would normally have a higher voltage going into the driver than the rating on the
motor. If it is a 'chopper' type drive, then the voltage could be as high as the driver
is designed for, the driver will control motor current to keep it at a safe level.
Higher voltage at the driver will allow somewhat higher motor speed, as the higher
voltage allows the inductance of the motor coils to change current direction faster.

A resistive driver can also benefit from higher voltage, but the resistors burn up a
lot of energy as heat.
