Tim;
The issue is simply one of property rights. No, I'm not the one who
contacted the person who was going to distribute the CD, so don't flame
me.
Anything you write is automatically copyright material unless you
specifically place the information in the public domain. While many
folks don't care, mind, or in fact appreciate, someone making an archive
of a group available at nominal costs, some DO mind. There is also
always the question of how much to charge before it becomes a case where
someone simply leaches all of the information from some source, and then
sells this information for a profit. While I have little to contribute
to this group, I do post quite a bit in other groups. I'm not doing
this to make money, but to give and get support for folks with common
interests. If someone reprints (CD/book/magazine article, whatever) my
work without credit and to make money, I have a problem with that, as do
many others.
While the individual creating this particular CD seems to have been far
more interested in performing a service for fellow hobbyists rather than
making a fortune, the legal aspects remain the same. While you might
think that $5 or $10 to have all of this information available in a
searchable format is great, what would you think if you saw this groups
archives in a catalog with a marketing banner such as "The wisdom of the
legendary CCED group all in one place! Dozens of authors! Linux/EMC!
CAD! Code snippetts! ...", and a price of $99? Going to wonder if your
stuff is in this? Going to wonder where your share of the money is?
This particular area has been an item of some contention in several
yahoo groups, and over on RCM. The individual who posted the statement
regarding copyright laws to this group took a huge raft of grief over on
RCM for wanting to sell a CD archive of that group. He also was seeking
only a modest price for his efforts as well.
Dropping mills on folks for suggesting that intellectual property laws
should be respected seems rather inappropriate. There are several
options in this case that might be more useful:
Create a group that has a condition of membership specifying that all
posts are public domain.
Start an email campaign to get the laws changed.
