Hi Bob,
I am not sure just how "accurate" you are referring to, but IMHO this
method would be a lot more accurate than using an 8 foot level to span the
gap. One of the best methods I have ever found to level two objects that
are far apart is to use a water level. Get 10 feet of clear vinyl hose (3/8"
or larger diameter) from the hardware store and just about fill it with
water. Try to have the ends pointing straight up for at least a foot. Adjust
the hose up and down on one end until the water level on that side reaches a
reference point on one of your rails then adjust the other rail to the water
level on the other end of the hose.
