Hi Ray,
excellent. The machine I have it loaded onto now is an old P133 full of ISA
cards etc. and everything was detected and installed successfully - LAN,
soundcard, video etc. The only problem area appeared when I changed monitor
for this old, single frequency ATI jobby and I've now sorted the problem.
There is a file called 'Knoppix Cheatcodes' which lists all the kinds of
boot options and I found that, in this case, I needed to tell it 'knoppix
vga=normal screen=1024x768'. I have now put this into the lilo.conf file as
an 'append=' and it is happy. When you run Knoppix from the CD the chances
are it will run straight away but I found that the easiest way to get things
started if it played up was to use the options either 'knoppix
screen=800x600' or 'fb800x600' - either set a screen resolution or firce it
to use a set sized frame buffer. Once the thing is running, you can
configure everything - your LAN settings, modem settings, passwords etc. and
save them to a floppy by simply typing 'saveconfig' in the terminal window.
Then, when you want to load the CD again, you can do so by typing 'knoppix
floppyconfig' at the boot prompt and it will run with all your previous
configurations - not such a difficult thing to do. The first time I played
with it I was quite surprised that I managed to get it to browse the web
across my internal network within about 20 minutes from starting the
computer up!
The Kernel used is Linux-2-4-19 and KDE is the latest version 3. There is a
mountain of applications, development packages, QCAD, Tcl, TK etc. installed
as standard.
I intend to try getting EMC to run under this distro when time permits
(SWMBO has just had an operation so I'm under the thumb a bit at present).
If anyone has successfully patches RTAI to the 2.4.19 kernel and got EMC
running already, I'd be pleased to know.
Best wishes,
Ian
