A quick comment on EMC but I am sure others could do a better job explaining about it.

EMC was written to evaluate high performance Multi-axis CNC SERVO equipment. Originally it was intended to be used on multiple OS, mainly Unix & NT.

Then Linux came along and it was cheap and the commercial NT-RT kernel was a fortune so the main implementation was switched to Linux for good reasons.

EMC was newer intended for low end applications with steppers. People on this list begged and pleaded with the EMC authors to add the pulse output for steppers.

If you do not need the performance or features, some of the simple programs might be a better choice for your application. Please to not complain about the EMC authors without knowing and understanding the program.

By the way, I still have not decided which way to go myself, I am still "a neutral observer" except after using servos before I will be implementing a servo system for my milling machine. I have used steppers for other applications and will again, but not where I want high performance.
