So the same 2 questions still remain, how exactly is the controller
board better than using the printer port unit?
And how is the software better / different? (features / functionality)
I feel with the vast knowledge on this forum we could get a better /
more succint / definitive answer for all those that may be interested.

It is the DeskWinNC controller but the software is an integrated bundle
of the functionality of RasterFratz, DeskPCB, StlWork Lite, Deskam,
DeskArt, DeskEngrave. As I said, the software by itself is very useful
for creating G-code to work with any controller. You do not have to use
the DeskWinNC controller board, but can just generate g-code instead.
The download beta is fully functional for 30 days and lets you generate
all the G-code you want. You just can not use the controller functions
unless you have a DeskCNC (DeskWinNC) controller card.
