Regarding the software. My suggestion is download the beta and try it.
Currently the help file is not there so you have to poke around, but it
is fully funcitonal. Some will like what it offers, some will not. It is
giving you the functionality of quite a number of products all wrapped
up in one. Individually the products have been successful on their own.
Now you can get them in a bundle for much less than buying each one.
The external board has been discussed many times on the list. It
relieves the computer of the task that is the hardest to do in a Windows
environment. Yes, Art has done a great job of working around it with
Mach1, but if you don't want to put a 500 Mhz + box with 2000 or XP on
it in your shop you can not run it. DeskCNC will run on pretty much a
beater Windows box and work fine with 95, 98, and ME. Even with the most
anemic system it will still run at 25000 sps.
