Hi Chuck,
I modified a very similar X-Y vice. On mine one nut was cast in, I
drilled, counter bored and taped for a clamping screw then slit that side
of the nut. The lead screw thread was off centre in the cast lug... almost
like it was designed for the modification. The other screw had a removable
nut on which I used Sven Peter's Hamburger-Hotdog design (posted sometime
in may 2001). I also added thrust bearings on the lead screws. The measured
backlash is now 0.08mm; and 0.03mm for the hamburger-hotdog screw. While it
was apart I did a bit of filing/scraping and lapping which was well worth
the effort. With less than optimal 100 in/oz motors I get rapids of
600mm/min. (12v steppers and a 30 volt driver based on allegro 3977 chip -
same as Xylotex)
