When I fitted my vice I found out the backlash was .019 for each axis. I don't know how much of that was thread and how much of that was the slop in the coller. Still was quite fun to play with. I don't know if I am going to take it much farther. I would rather get a bigger x/y table from enco or somewhere to convert and do a little better job. I have a nice old craftman floor drillpress that I would put it on - or make my z axis) You can get some pretty nice sized ones for under $100. The vice sure can machine parts though. using turbocnc w/backlash comp and tightening up the gibs I was making some nice circles(washers). the table that the drill press is setting on is actually the table of a work-in-proccess gantry mill. That is the main project. x and y is working we just have to make a z axis. It has a travel of about 3'X5'X2'

Do you mean allthread from the hardware store, or something else? We
just had a new hardware store open up in town...

I'd like to see some pics of your converted vise, and especially some
closeups of the relevant parts in the conversion. Tell me, from your
experience, if this is a reasonable approach. Casting a nut from JBWeld
epoxy, within the acme threaded nut. If I don't clean the oil off
first, it may even become a removable component that I could keep in
place with a set screw! Fully reversible...always the best way to do
any modifications.
