The BDI-Live is much smaller for a number of reasons. In no particular order:

Under 200Mb to fit on an 8cm CD.
Light and fast window manager (icewm).
The compiler and tools have been left out (easily downloaded from debian.org)
A smaller ISO gives dialup uses a chance to grab a copy.
A smaller ISO is easier for me to manipulate...
