Steve,

There is a bug in the EMC version that comes with the BDI install
that causes the lockup. On my computer it will lockup every once
in a while but it only happens on startup. Once you get it going,
all is fine. I leave my computer running with EMC started all of the
time, and don't have that problem any more. The EMC gurus have
figured out the problem and have it fixed in later versions.

Have you ever got it to load without locking up?

As for the parallel port being missing, I beleve that is ok as EMC
talks directly to the hardware. My system also has the parport
missing from the i/o menu and it works fine
