RE: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Automatic or easier tool changes for R8 mills ?

We use the Royal system - it makes easy and fast tool changes. The tool
holders are on the expensive side. I know there is also a locking screw you
should tighten when making a heavy cut with a face mill or even a 5/8"
endmill. That would slow down the change a little, however we just make
prototype parts and never push it that hard anyway.

Did you see the article is Home Shop Machinist magazine where Roland
Friesand (sp?) made a "quick change" tool holder system using a lever and
cam operated draw bar? I know it was in the last year, but I am not sure
which issue. You might get some ideas from that.

Hope that helps,

Mike

Subject: [CAD_CAM_EDM_DRO] Automatic or easier tool changes for R8 mills ?

Hi people.

We are getting tired of changing tools with the manual drawbar on our
R8 equipped CNC'd mill. Does anyone have any experience/ideas with
implementing a quick or automatic tool change with R8 collets ? The
first step in the automatic change would be to come up with some sort
of quick change collet system.

I know of two: the air wrench powered drawbar looseners/tighteners and
the the Royal system whereby the R8 collet is a holder for another
collet system.

I'm thinking something along the line of adding a pull nipple on top of
the R8 collet and pulling it up with an air powered drawbar something
like how the Cat40 system works.

Failing to find something that works for the R8, our next mill will
have a Cat something taper...

Thanks.
