I hope you're not putting 12V directly to the step/dir common???!!!??
Also, where do you get 12V unregulated from a computer? If you have a
12V line that's not between 11.4 and 12.6V, then you need a new power
supply. (It should be much closer to 12, but I think the spec is +-5%.)
They Geckos are set for 5V operation only. You can use 12V, but you
need current limiting resistors if you do it (It's not recommended in
any case). I think the current draw for each input is around 10-15 mA,
and you want 7V across the resistor. That makes for a 4.7K - 6.8K
resistor in line with each leg. (You need to use one per input since
the total current through the limiting resistor wouldn't be enough to
turn them both on at once.)
If you're using a floppy/hard drive power connector, just use the red
wire instead of yellow.
