Nope.

You should be supplying 5V to the Gecko at the common pin (pin 12). The
step and direction lines are active when you contact them to the ground
reference of the 5V supply. So, you should connect a switch between the
direction input and ground. When the switch is open, it'll be one
direction (no current flowing through the opto-isolator LED), and when
you flip the switch, it'll change direction.

Note that just hooking up a standard signal generator may not work,
since you do need to sink current from the step/dir inputs.
