Yes there are several dos and linux controller programs that will
do a reasonable job on a 486 Pc.
You should figure out the maximum stepcount required by your motors
and machine.
How fast are you gone run it and how many steps need to be put out
to get to that speed.
(Multiy stepping?, leadscrew ratio?, pulleys?)
About 10khz will be no problem if you need more you may want to
look for a faster Pc, a older Pentium is easy to come by these days.
The advantage of a faster Pc is that it is likely to run a more
consistent Pulse count it would be smuther at higher rates.
