A windows based machine control is fine. Delete all the movie players and other irrelevant software, stay off the internet and they are very reliable. Dedicate it to that CNC machine only. Windows systems that are reconfigured and changed by deleting and adding software often will become unstable. And can't forget all the nice people who write the spam and viruses for Windows and nothing else. Linux and Mac do not have that problem. Adding to their claim of reliability. Windows systems are inundated with malicious third party interference. If one stays off the internet and does not add any software there is no way the system can be corrupted. Once a PC works for a control and is stable just use it. Play on another PC. "If the car runs dont fix it" I run Mach2 and Bobcad on an XP system, Bugcad locks up occasionally but Windows or Mach2 have never.

I use an old 333mhz pc with 196mb running Win2000 and Mach2 on my Prazi
mill. It runs fast enough for than machine. I Use a 750mhz on my CNC
router, and that is limited to about 65 in/min rapids, but it has servos
and ratios that take 32,000 pulses per inch. It does run reliabily with
Mach set for the 35K pulse rate.
I sure wish Mach ran under Linux, and that I had a good CAD and CAM
suite, Id love to not have any microsoft product in the house. In
particular, note the new Microsoft policy to take effect in the next few
months that will require proof of orign to get service updates. See
