Keith,
The laptop I mentioned is a 500mz Pentium with 256meg ram. Ram is cheap
now - go for as much as you can stuff into the box. You are correct, XP
requires more resource than 98 to run well unless you can strip out most
of the MS crap. I think I have been told that you need a 600mz machine
to run MachX, but I'm a newbie - perhaps the experts can comment. Right
now, I'm not sure that the laptop will cut it with 500mz - shame because
it's a noce machine (with parallel port) and would mount great in a
pedestal.

Interesting thought George.
Currently I use an old Toshiba Tecra 520CDT running Winders98SE with
32meg
RAM. This has a 166MHz processor, Pentium MMX. I had always believed
that
a faster system with more RAM was required to run Win XP.
I has started to look for a suitable cheap second hand machine, but
might
see if I can install XP. Trouble is, the machine seems terribly slow
compared with my desktop machine, although, by the standards of only ten
years ago, it was quite fast.
I don't think that a fast machine is required to run a CNC interface, so
if
WinXP will run on my present machine, I would be more than happy. Might
try to obtain some more RAM for it first.
