Threading on a lathe has never been easier with CNC and Mach3
All you do is go into Mach3, select threading wizard, enter the few
variables that you would have to know if you were going to manually machine
the threads then ppress the post button on the wizard and it sends it to the
Mach3 auto portion of the program. With you tool in position press cycle
start and watch it make several passes taking exactly the same amount off
each pass except for the spring pass and the other pass.
It can do coarse threads, fine thread, acme, metric and even tapered threads
I have a 13X25 Jet lathe that I retrofitted using my 600 oz in servo motors
of the XZ axis. I can still use the machine in either the manual or cnc
mode. With mach3 I can to things that would be difficult to do with a
standard thread dial or electronic gearing
With Mach3 which you can d/l for free but after you use it for a while
you'll want to get a licensed copy but the demo copy will run 1000 lines of
code. A typical threading operation is only 20-30 lines if that.
