Consider your $150 Frog type gizmo.
Add a second channel. Charge $170.
Now you have a two axis controller and can do full CNC.

The myth that the electronic leadscrew option is disproportionately cheaper
is part of (what I see) as the dissonant approach here.

Our electronic lead screw device costs about the same as a A3977 3 axis
controller. (Xylotex etc). The stepper and its mounting are the same, I ran
my CNC lathe from its leadscrew for about 18months before I fitted a
ballscrew, you still need a power supply too.

So the additional costs for CNC are one more stepper and an old computer.
Realistically, the cheap CNC setup will cost about twice as much as the
cheap leadscrew thingy and will deliver more than double the value.
