Mach does look complex(and I guess it is) but speaking as somebody who
learned to use it by reading that manul, and the help of the
mach1mach2cnc group(and the seat of my pants) it isn't really that
complex to use, if you don't want it to be.

I think I use about a dozen screen buttons most of the time.

The rest are there if you need them, but usually I(at least) don't.

So don't be scared off because it looks complex(if that is the case).

I usually use a cmbination of CNC and DNC(I think that means "Direct
Numericcal Control) wher I type in the commands that I want the machine
to do.

For instance, I just finished making an adapter plate for my dividing
head(to CNC it, of course!), which consisted of a rectangle of steel 6"
x 2.5", and 1/4" thick, with a 1.5: hole at one end, surrounded by a
square 4-hole pattern of .188" holes, and a 1.125" hole at the other
end, surrounded by a triangular 30hole pattern of 1/4" holes.

I used the CNC to drill holes at all of the 1/4" and .188" locations,
and also to pop in a 1'4" hole at the centers of each of the larger
holes.

Then I used DNC to locate a larger drill above each of those largee hole
centers, drilled the 1/4" holes out to 3/8", and then used a boring head
to take them up to the required size.

I LOVE not having to count handwheel revs and squint at tiny little
micrometer dials.

But, it's certainly not for everyine, and if you don't want to go whole
hog, more power to ya'!

Tom, your email has eloquently sold me one more time that I do not want
CNC at this time. As you say, if I want to run a CAD/CAM program
anyway, I should go CNC. This is particularly true if I will be making
more than one copy. If I want to do my design on a napkin, I don't want
all that overhead. Many of us who like the e-leadscrew are much more
interested designing one offs on napkins. Everything I've made to date
is in that category and everything I foresee making anytime soon is the
same.

I believe we have successfully established that people with CNC already
under their belts have no interest in an electronic leadscrew. Why are
we surprised at that conclusion? OTOH, I downloaded the Mach docs the
other day thinking I'd just read about a couple of those wizards before
nighty nite and maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

COME ON GUYS! It's a zillion pages. I mean really, it's an awesome
program, but I do not need the complexity at this stage. I've got too
many other irons on the fire already. I'll get to it eventually, and I
would like to see any leadscrew work I do be set up so I can have both
someday.

BTW, I was extremely pleased to see Mariss' remarks about his ratio
command in G-Rexx. As usual, he has engineered a first-class solution
that will be useful for many things. His docs were also much shorter
than those for Mach--no slam on Mach, he's just building appliances,
which is what I want as I have mentioned.

Best,

BW
