Hi Bill, thanks for the nice words, I do my best, I'm just muddling
through like everyone else :) I have had a look at the motor in the
past but I can't remember enough about what I saw to comment on the
exact details but it does have brushes and it has many poles, that is
many sets of windings that can be connect to brushes. The brushes
tend to span several poles and I think it provides smoother torque.

There are now some very inexpensive brushless motors for RC use, what
you must remember is that if you intend to run them continously then
you will have to apply less power than the average modeller does. The
easiest way to get one working is to buy the matching speed controller
and connect a servo tester to it, you then have a knob you can turn to
adjust the power applied to the motor.

I get the impression a lot of the noise from routers comes from the
fans built into them. I remember someone posting some interesting
info about removing the built in fans before adding external fans.
Quiet PCs are now very popular with slow reving cooling fans, I wonder
if these might also be used. Rab Gordon who does the CNC toolkit was
telling me what a joy his little double ended brushless spindle was to
use as he really just hears the cutter noise, no brush and I assume no
fans.

Cheers,

Graham
